On the other hand, Tom Friedman argues that what really matters is that the administration has lost sight of the objective in his column on today's NYT
Winning the Real War
He is cutting the Bushies some slack, but basically telling us everyone knew they were full of it since the very beginning. Frankly, I'd separate the two arguments completely: 1) let's get the job done in Iraq for the right reasons while we can ( bring democracy; use Iraq as an example to become a beacon for the Middle East; Stabilize the region before the Saudi regime collapses etc ) and 2) Impeach the President AND the Vice President for having violated the most sacred of democratic values ( trust when it matters ) if they have actually manipulated us.
Bush sounds more and more like Clinton, debating the meaning of " is ". Let us not go through this again, please allow us to debate the crux of the matter and judge our Commander in Chief on the basis of reality: has he or has't he deliberately misled the American people into going to war? If even only one of his assertions are found to have been deliberately used while knowing they were false statements..... the Prez and the VP must go.
But if the above cannot be demonstrated, let's all keep our eyes on the ball and do as we said we would: build a new liberal democracy in teh Middle East. It the least we can do for Iraq, whether we invaded them for the WMDs or just because we felt like it.....
